How Does The Immortal Trait Work Again? (2024)

Correct me if I am wrong. When you get the immortal trait... isn't it suppose to lock your character portrait into the age group when you got the immortality trait?

Like for instance if you get the immortal trait when you're 26, shouldn't it keep you looking like the 16-30 age portrait even when you're 30-45?

Cause I remember when adding immortality through the console that is what happened...

But when I tried modding the traits file by allowing the immortality trait to show up in the character creator... it seems the immortality trait doesn't work properly once you actually get in game... it only gives you the health bonus, but doesn't give the actual immortality effects? Cause I noticed my character's portrait aged once he passed the threshold despite having the immortal trait.

Is there a reason for that?

Im not sure the reason, specifically, but the game treats immortality obtained -before- the gamestart, and immortality obtained -During- the game differently.

so your portait does not lock in to your age if you obtain a form of immortality with the ruler designer, but if you gave it to yourself with a console command, or through an event, it would keep you from aging.

It's just a bug. Immortality trait and portrait non-aging is a bit wonky: in some cases where characters are > 250 years old and immortality is added via script, it will use the child portrait instead of adult one, no clues why.

Yea because neither of these ways are the real way of getting immortality.

Is there a reason for that? Is there a reason they should allow you to skip what is a hard quest meant to be hard and simply allow you to become what can be an overpowered immortal?

When you succeed the long event chain that is titled "On Matters of Life and Death" you will gain the Immortal trait which grants you +10 health, and an immortal flag which intercepts and prevents several death causing things and events.

Now naturally jimmy rigging the trait in through scripting or character creation isn't going to give you that flag.

Nor do I see a reason why it should.

As for your face no it does not continue to age after gaining immortality the natural way though event. I would assume jimmy rigging also does not come with whatever does that.

Don't forget mods, as long-lived (elves, ...) or immortal races (sorcerers, ...) typically use the immortality trait.

Yes, the event grants you a flag; a flag which accomplishes nothing, save prevent you from getting an event to start the "Eternal life chain" again. It is the trait, and ONLY the trait that gives you immunity to diseases, natural death,aging, and locks your portrait, and that's because the "Immortal" trait has the "immortal = yes" flag in it, just like diseases have "is_disease = yes", or others have "pilgrimage" which puts you into regency.

Unfortunately, the "immortal=yes" flag bugs out when added via Ruler Designer, and it doesn't lock your age.
It has nothing to do with skipping a "hard quest meant to be hard", as the bug existed long before the Immortality was implemented in vanilla, for example in GoT or Gehemnisnacht, it's simply a bug that Paradox had no will/way to fix, and they don't have much reason to fix it anyway, as no character in vanilla begins with Immortality, and mods can use a simple work-around of giving you a fake "Immortal" trait to choose in ruler designer, which on the start of the game will trigger an event to remove fake Immortality, and give you the real deal, which will now work correctly.
