  • SNS - Christmas is Coming - 2014 Ornament from Barbara Jackson

Here are the details for our 2014 ornament, Christmas is Coming (and the Goose is getting fat) --Welcome to number THREE in Barbara Jackson's wonderful series of holiday ornaments. Our tradition continues with this year's offering, Christmas is Coming. Here are the details...Christmas is Coming – our 2014 Christmas ornament from Barbara JacksonFall is definitely in the air as our menagerie of country critters frolic over the hills. The textures are created with clever use of mosaic stitch (one of Barbara’s favorite stitches) and a “Smyrna variation” that Barbara developed. Since many of these motifs are worked in overdyed silks, everyone’s work will be slightly different. The mosaic stitch gives the hills a quilted feel; while Barbara’s other favorite stitch, petit point, add lots of details to the fauna and flora. Surprisingly, there is no cross stitch in this piece. The design is small and very doable – the finished pouch measures a petit 3¼” x 4¾” and with the handle, it’s 7” tall. This teeny tiny tote is a great place to hide a special gift and hang on your tree. Or, tuck in some aromatic cinnamon sticks and rosemary and suspend it from a cabinet knob in your kitchen. If you prefer a tree ornament, no problem – just add some stuffing and sew across the top seam. Detailed instructions will be given for making the teeny tiny tote and remember, finishing supplies for the tote are included in your kit for those last-minute finishes. (I can’t be the only one putting stuff together on Christmas Eve. LOL.)And don't let that 40 count linen scare you. The holes are easier to see than you might think. Good light and some magnification make this project manageable for most anyone. And if you want to go larger, just order the "instructions only" and you can enlarge the design to your heart's delight.Original Class timing:November 28 - December 19, 2014

This is number NINE in Barbara Jackson’s wonderful series of holiday ornaments.Barbara describes her latest creation:Pineapples were a favorite symbol of hospitality in the 18th century and were often seen as the crowning glory on the centerpiece of a dining table. Create a festive tree ornament or basket fob using the pineapple, crabapples and pears as your centerpiece. The design is mounted on pear shaped acid-free cardboard giving you a very distinctive ornament -- and the best news is that the cardboard is pre-cut and included in the kit! The finished piece will be 3 ¾” x 2 ¾” at its widest point. Lots of different stitches are used including queen, Smyrna cross variation, mosaic, eyelets, and French knots. Beautiful overdyed silks from Au Ver à Soie and Gloriana create the design on Zweigart 36 count cream linen. Precut cardboard will be used to create a beautiful pear-shaped ornament with felted wool leaves (also included in the kit) on top. Everyone’s project will look slightly different as these threads are hand dyed, but that’s part of the fun! Note that the boxwood in the picture comes from Barbara’s garden and is not included in the kit. J6” x 7” stretcher bars are highly recommended since stab stitches need to be used.Class timing:Online class: December 8 – December 18, 2020

  • SNS Divisions 2021 with Debbie Rowley

Welcome to Divisions 2021 with Debbie Rowley!*UPDATE: Note new start date of August 16 due to delays with supplies.*Divisions is a 12” x 12” square, stitched on 18 ct. eggshell mono canvas or 18 ct.white mono canvas. Debbie has created two set colorways (shown in the attached pdf) or create your own colorway. The project is recommended for intermediate to advanced stitchers and the ability to read a chart is a “must.” Debbie’s goal is to encourage stitchers to achieve a natural stitching rhythm by learning how to execute complex stitches without constantly referring to the stitch diagrams and her popular Zoom teaching sessions help to achieve that goal. This project features beautiful Treenway silks in four weights, so you’ll have the opportunity to explore a newer thread line. The original colorway of Divisions (Southwest colorway) uses Treenway Silks in four weights, supplemented with other threads (pearl cottons, metallic, rayon ribbons and metallic/silk braids), in a light turquoise, beige and light orange color scheme. The alternate color way is based on a Peaco*ck color scheme, using cottons instead of silks to reduce the cost of the kit. The project is divided into several distinct stitching areas, each with its own texture to add to the overall abstract geometric design. Debbie will emphasize the mechanics of each stitch, illustrating how the stitches are formed on the front and back of the canvas, so that stitchers can learn to stitch with fewer errors, stitching faster and more naturally.Stitches used include: Waffle, double fan doubled, jessicas, walnetos, crescents, battlement couching, bound cross, reverse laced wheels, fancy cross, Amadeus, rays, Brighton, Victorian step, double leviathan, woven ribbons, sword Amadeus, trellis cross, scotch with overstitching, hungarian, sprat’s head, triangle Amadeus, Rhodes, 8 trip herringbone, bunger and laid patterns.Class timing:August 2 through September 30, 2021 -- online class (8 weeks, one lesson per week; live Zoom sessions weekly (one daytime and one evening session per week, PLUS sessions are recorded for anyone who can’t make the scheduled time.)) PLEASE NOTE LONGER TIME ALLOWED BETWEEN SIGNUPS AND CLASS START. Supplies are taking longer and longer to arrive. We do our best to start on time!Class officially ends on September 30, but classroom remains open indefinitely for questions and followup.

  • SNS Gage with Orna Willis

Welcome to Gage with Orna Willis and Shining Needle Society!*Important note: Our class start date has been updated to February 15. Supply chain issues continue to present challenges. We are setting up this classroom group now to communicate updates to all of you.*Needlework has been used throughout history as a way to recognize and honor special people. Additionally, artists/designers sometimes create works as a way to call attention to important causes – often creating special fundraising events to further support those causes. Gage was created especially by Orna in honor of Gage Harper. Gage is not likely a name known to you. Gage is the beloved son of Cece Stricklin, the talented dyer behind The Thread Gatherer line of threads. Sadly, Gage died by suicide in 2019. Orna was inspired to honor Gage’s memory with this project which also honors him by using many threads from The Thread Gatherer. Cece shared some memories and thoughts of Gage and that note appears at the end of this document. She also shares some insight on ways to support someone dealing with the aftermath of suicide, and importantly, how to help organizations working to prevent suicide. Cece, Orna and Shining Needle Society are all donating portions of our fees for this class to suicide prevention. If you would like to donate to this important cause, please see the suggested organizations at the end of this document. It would be a most appreciated way to honor Gage’s memory. In creating and designing Gage , Orna says “using the beauty of (Cece’s) threads to ‘speak’ of the beauty of her son has been deeply moving for me. I enjoy talking to her and learning about Gage. She is a very gentle and brave woman.” Our project honors Gage’s life with its vibrant colors and many intricate motifs. This counted geometric design will provide stitching challenges with several complex stitches. With Orna’s guidance, each of these stitches will be broken down and dissected so that students will learn the tricks to bringing out the best in each stitch. You will learn tips that you will take on with you to any projects you stitch in the future. Orna recommends this project for intermediate stitchers and the ability to read charts is a must. This piece is stitched using 39 different threads, all but one of them being silk. The luscious threads have rich hues and clever overdyes, and they come to you from Cece and The Thread Gatherer. The colors are characteristic of Orna: bold and unique with dazzling combinations.Orna’s instruction guides are works of art in themselves. They are beautifully presented in color. As part of your kit you will receive a set of full color Master Charts that are laminated so that they stay in pristine condition for years to come. The design size is approximately 11” x 11” and the project is stitched on 18-ct mono canvas (cut size: 16” x 16”). The kit includes threads, canvas and needles presented beautifully. All kits also come with color laminated Master Charts. Gage will be taught in 5 lessons. Each lesson will be accompanied by videos, written lesson pages, charts, photos. The class will also include one 2-hour Zoom session that will also be recorded for anyone who can’t make it at the scheduled time on March 1.Student will supply 16” x 16” stretcher bars and usual stitching supplies. • SNS God Bless Us Everyone - the 2022 ornament from Barbara Jackson

Barbara describes her latest creation:Tiny Tim will always live in our hearts as the lad who declared ”God bless us everyone.” It brings a smile to everyone’s face. And so, I decided to add it to this year’s Christmas ornament. A tempting assortment of traditional sampler stitches are used to add interest to this design, including eyelets, Smyrna variations, French knots, petit point, and mosaic stitch. Some stitchers ask, “Is this mostly cross stitch?” What you may think is cross stitch is mosaic stitch which provides additional density and texture. For threads, we have Au Ver à Soie, Gloriana silk and a dash of DMC floss to create the design on 36 count Zweigart linen. Precut acid-free board will be used to produce the oval shaped ornament. Everyone’s project will look slightly different as some of the threads are hand dyed, but that’s part of the fun!The finished ornament measures approximately 2.5” x 3.5”.Online class: December 6 – December 20, 2022

  • SNS - Hearts Are Fully Blest - 2017 Ornament from Barbara Jackson

Here are the details for our 2017 ornament, Hearts are Fully Blest --Barbara describes the inspiration for her latest creation:Join our Colonial couple as they decorate their home for the holidays! Stitched on 36-count cream linen, Gloriana and Soie d'Alger are the threads of choice for this familiar scene. An enticing assortment of traditional sampler stitches, enhanced by the overdyed threads, will give everyone's design a slightly different look. Taking a cue from 18th century samplers, petit point stitches are incorporated into many motifs to add extra dimension and crispness to all the animals and birds that always appear as the supporting actors for these flights into whimsy. • SNS - How Great Our Joy - 2018 Ornament from Barbara Jackson

Here are the details for our 2018 ornament, How Great Our Joy --Welcome to number SEVEN in Barbara Jackson's wonderful series of holiday ornaments. Our tradition continues with this year's offering, How Great Our Joy.Barbara describes the inspiration for her latest creation:It's brrrr cold outside but Christmas preparations are still going on as our "Santa" sneaks in the gifts. A tempting assortment of traditional sampler stitches are used to add sparkle to this design, including queen's stitch, eyelets, French knots, and mosaic stitch. Barbara uses lots of petit point to give meticulous details to all the frisky animals. Au Ver à Soie, Gloriana silk and a sprinkling of metallic gold create the design on Zweigart 36 count linen. Everyone's project will look slightly different as these threads are hand dyed, but that's part of the fun! 7" mini stretcher bars are highly recommended since stab stitches need to be used for many of the stitches. Make this a Christmas to remember!Original class timing:November 26 -- December 14, 2018

  • SNS Indie Pop with Debbie Rowley of Debbee's Designs

Welcome to Indie Pop with Debbie Rowley of Debbee's Designs!Would you like to try and get a bit more creative with your counted canvas projects? Our newest offering from Debbie Rowley, Indie Pop, puts the stitcher in the driver’s seat! The center motif of a large irregular Chilly Hollow Stitch and composite ribbon bands are the same for each stitcher, but after that framework is in place the stitcher makes all the decisions. In addition, stitchers will decide which color and texture of threads to use for their project. All of this will be carefully guided so the stitcher can make informed choices, with extensive diagrams and instructions, suggestions for thread textures for the different stitches, and recommendations for color placements. Stitchers can choose from four distinct color ways—Coral/Lilac, Neutral/ Mauve, Autumn or Tropical.Threads included in the kits include Caron Collection Watercolours, DMC flosses and #8 pearl cottons, Rainbow Gallery Silk Lamé Braids, Neon Rays and Neon Rays+, and Kreinik #8 braids.Design size is 8” x 8”, 144 x 144 stitches on 18 ct. canvas; canvas cut size is 14” x 14”. • SNS Keira's Lollipops

Welcome to our Keira's Lollipops online class with Cindy Hambrick and Shining Needle Society!About Keira's Lollipops:Keira’s Lollipops is another clever project from Cindy’s prolific imagination and was inspired by her granddaughters. This time, the muse was her granddaughter Keira, who just loves sweets. Whenever Keira and her little sister Natalie come to visit, Cindy likes to take them on an outing where she cannot help but spoil the girls (just a little bit) with some treats. What she has found is that those large lollipops you can get at truck stops like Buc-ee’s (their favorite) are perfect. The girls are only allowed to lick them -- no crunching allowed. Once they get home and start on other activities, the lollipops go into the trash, and the girls don’t really get that much sugar from such a big treat! Cindy created these calorie-free replicas just for fun.Important class dates are as follows:Class starts: September 15 – 5 weekly lessonsClass ends: October 16, 2020The class is composed of five lessons, with a new lesson posted to the SNS online group on Tuesday of each week. Each lesson will be accompanied by a Zoom meeting to help you see the techniques in action and ask questions in real-time. The meetings for a given lesson will be scheduled at two different times on Wednesday (day and evening) to try and accommodate as many schedules as possible.

  • SNS Little Pilgrim Hornbook with Barbara Jackson

Welcome to Little Pilgrim Hornbook with Barbara Jackson!*Important Note: Thank you for joining us for this second opportunity for our class. You are joining a class that is in-progress. All lessons are already posted and you can find them here:* *https://shining-needle-society.groups.io/g/Little-Pilgrim-Hornbook/files* Please feel free to ask questions and chime in, just like any other class. You will likely spur another student to get out their earlier project!Barbara’s newest project commemorates one of the youngest immigrants to arrive on the Mayflower in 1620. Mary More was a four-year-old indentured servant who sailed from England under very unusual circ*mstances and sadly, Mary died during the very harsh first winter at Plymouth Colony. Barbara’s choice of Mary as a subject for our project was influenced by her participation in stitching the Plymouth Tapestry, an on-going multi-year project being stitched at Pilgrim Hall.Barbara combined aspects of a traditional hornbook with sampler elements and created a charming tribute to Mary More. It’s quite sobering to realize that Mary’s short life occurred more than 400 years ago! Here are the details for Little Pilgrim Hornbook:Mary More had a truly short and tragic life. She was basically dumped onto the Mayflower by a father who didn’t want his children anymore. For a four-year-old that had to be scary! She made it across the ocean, only to die during the first winter. To commemorate this little Pilgrim, Barbara created a sampler in softly shaded silks that includes motifs typical of the 17th century – Mary’s timeframe. This sampler, worked on 40-ct. cream linen, is petite – only 3.5” x 3.5”. Our sampler includes a variety of stitches including double running, Smyrna variation, queen, petit point, four-sided stitch, and eyelets. The tiny sampler fits perfectly on a special hornbook designed to hold your threads. A small mayflower motif adorns the handle to gently remind us of the tenuous beginnings of this country. The sampler is stitched and mounted to an acid-free board which is then mounted to the hornbook. The kit contains 40-ct cream linen (cut size: 6” x 6”), silk threads, mounting board and padding, the hornbook, and complete instructions.Important class dates are as follows:After class officially ends, online classroom remains open indefinitely for questions, catching up and progress pictures.

There was a shortage of wood for the basket handles with the supplier. What an adorable holiday basket design fresh from Barbara’s prolific needle! Our 3” (diameter) basket is just the right size for a stash of chocolate holiday kisses or use it for an ort (thread snippets) container in your stitching area. The handmade basket is made especially for Barbara by Janice Card, a master maker of Nantucket baskets. You may have admired Janice’s work at the Celebration of Needlework events.Nothing says Christmas like the arrival of the family Christmas tree! And as you decorate it with garlands and beaded fripperies, you can always sneak a bit of chocolate from the basket. To keep up your energy, of course! The candy basket is no trifle – it’s a handmade 3” Nantucket basket from Janice Card who lives near Cape Cod. Janice painstakingly creates each basket on a wooden mold using tiny reed weavers. • SNS - Natalie Shea's Goodie Stand with Cindy Hambrick and Shining Needle Society

Welcome to our Natalie Shea's Goodie Stand online class with Cindy Hambrick and Shining Needle Society!Today we have another fun project for our beading enthusiasts! So many of you enjoyed – and finished! – Cindy Hambrick’s recent beading projects. Natalie Shea’s Goodie Stand is another clever project from Cindy’s prolific imagination. Cindy says this project was inspired by her youngest grandchild, Natalie Shea, who kept trying to stick candy canes and pencils in various beaded containers she had displayed around the house. Cindy decided to make a special "goodie stand" just for her granddaughter. One thing led to another, and now Natalie Shea has a beaded stand for Holiday Candy Canes, Halloween Pencils and, just in time for the Fourth of July, she now has one for Patriotic Sparkles. The Goodie Stands are created in Delica beads with additional accent beads around a 1½” diameter weighted base. The Holiday Candy Cane stand is 2 ½” tall, the Halloween Pencil stand is 3 1/2” tall and the Patriotic Sparkles stand is 3” tall. This project is recommended for beginning level beaders, and uses the Tubular Peyote technique. Each theme has its own pattern, instructions and specific kit; however, since the construction technique is similar all three stands will be taught in the same online classroom. Each complete kit comes with the Delicas, Swarovskis and mini-fringe beads needed for the stand, and weight for the base. Step-by-step instructions with many detailed illustrations are included that show how to start these basic stitches and create the stand. The pencils, sparklers and candy canes are not included in the kits. Please note that due to the need for specific supplies, this project is only available with the purchase of a kit.Important class dates are as follows:June 1 through June 30 -- online classAfter class officially ends, online classroom remains open indefinitely for questions, catching up and progress pictures.

  • SNS Rainbow Inchies with Kathy Rees

Welcome to Rainbow Inchies with Kathy Rees and Shining Needle Society!Rainbow Inchies is fresh from the prolific needle of Kathy Rees and never before available anywhere! Kathy is known for her wonderful geometric designs. Her use of color and clever stitch choices has gained her a loyal following among stitchers. This project will captivate you! It’s so much fun to experience the joy of completing each of the inchies “boxes” as you progress through the project. Rainbow Inchies would also make an ideal travel project since there are very few threads that need to be laid – only the gray inner box borders are laid threads. It’s a manageable size for travel too with a design size measuring about 8” x 10” on 18-ct mono canvas. Cut size of canvas is 14” x 16". Threads include Watercolours, Pepper Pot, Silk Lame Braid, and DMC pearl cotton & DMC cotton floss. The project is available completely kitted in the colors as shown. If you would like to stitch Rainbow Inchies in different colors (or you have a huge stash), choose “instructions only” and you can provide your own supplies.Rainbow Inchies is a counted canvas (needlepoint) design stitched on 18-count mono canvas. It measures approximately 8” x 10” (canvas is cut 14” x 16").*Important timing update:*Our class was originally scheduled to begin on July 12, but the thread manufacturers are really struggling with the supply chain. One supplier is currently awaiting the base thread that they use for dyeing. That's on its way, but it's still going to take some time to dye, skein and ship the thread to Kathy so she can complete your kits. Our best guess is that we are looking at a delay of at least a month, but that's truly a guess. We're setting up the classroom group now so we can keep you informed as things progress. Thank you in advance for your understanding. We *do* appreciate it!New estimated start date: August 16 – class begins (dependent on arrival of supplies for kits); 4 lessons posted weekly.September 30 – class ends, but classroom remains open at least until September 2023 for questions and pictures.

  • SNS Ups and Downs with Kathy Rees

Welcome to Ups and Downs -- our 2024 Mystery Project from Kathy Rees!Kathy’s new mystery project for 2024 is going to be a lot of fun. It’s a clever design with lots of stitch variations. It is similar in size and format to some of her earlier mysteries and is stitched on eggshell 18-ct mono canvas. The design size is about 12” x 16” and the cut size is 16” x 20”, but this time it’s a vertical (portrait orientation) format. That’s a great incentive for finishing up an earlier mystery class and freeing up those stretcher bars to be used again! Kathy has created three colorways for this project: Aquas (original – colors similar to Kathy’s VERY popular Beaded Bermuda Reef project), purples, or neutral. Pictures of the colorway threads are included at the end of this document.Important class dates are:March 21, 2024 - class begins; lessons posted approximately every four weeks on Thursdays with a total of five lessons. This allows for fun stitching time over the weekend!July 2024 - class ends, but classroom remains open at least until August 2025 for questions and pictures.
