Adventure in the GD: Luxembourg's best outdoor adventures and activity centres (2024)

Whether it's a canoe trip on the Sûre, soaring skyward in a hot air balloon, or hitting the high ropes at an activity centre, Luxembourg has you covered.

At the time of writing (April 2021), some activities may be closed or restricted due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions. While we have indicated restrictions where possible below, we suggest contacting the venue in advance to check.

See the GD from above

New Spirit Balloons is a not-for-profit outfit based in Altwies. They offer balloon flights for up to 12 people, allowing passengers to soar across the Moselle, see the Grand Duchy's forests from on high, and float across the meadows. Contact them direct to reserve your flight. From 145 euros per person.

For something more thrilling, SkyDive Luxembourg offer tandem jumps. After a 15 minute briefing, you'll set off with your instructor on a flight over the north of the country. You'll jump out together at 4000 metres, free falling at around 200km/h, before your instructor opens the parachute at 1500 metres. From 265 euros.

Another option is paragliding, available at Ecole Mos Ailes in France, just across the border from Dudelange. Prices start at 98 euros for the first lesson and a 15 minute flight.

Clamber up trees

If you've got kids - or just enjoy monkeying around - treetop activity centres can be a great day out. Parc L'eh in Dudelange offer seven different rope courses at up to 17 metres, including a Tarzan rope-swing, rope bridges and cableways. It's suitable for children as young as two, and prices start from ten euros for kids.As of April 2021, Parc L'eh is scheduled to reopen on 15 May 2021.

Steinfort Adventure offers ten adventure courses, with the easiest suitable for children as young as four when accompanied by an adult. It's necessary to register in advance, with prices beginning at five euros for the youngest adventurers.

If you're willing to travel further, there's also some great options near Luxembourg's borders. Outdoor Freizeit in Dillingen offer kayak hire on the Sûre. They recommend paddling down to Echternach, a route of about 12km. Prices start from 25 euros for a one person kayak, or 35 euros for a two person vessel.

Camping du Rivage also offer kayaking on the Sûre, with an 11km tour starting and ending in Bollendorf. Prices start at 20 euros for a one person kayak, or 28 euros for a two person vessel. They also hire out mountain bikes on site. You may see them advertising under the monikerRonn's Bikes and Kayaks.

For something more adventurous, the Luxembourg Waterski & Wakeboard Federation maintain a directory of clubs.Wake SNGin between Grevenmacher and Machtum on the Moselle offers a beginner's wakeboard and wakesurf package, with equipment, coaching and 12 minutes behind the boat for 30 euros.

Trot, or gallop, along

For equestrian fans, as well as total newbies,Baybees Riding School in Lenningen has a wide selection of outdoor activities - including pony experience rides for infants as young as two, pony camp sleepovers, parent and child forest rides and - for advanced riders - a day learning horse care in the stables. Contact them directly for price and availability.

In Berdorf, Pony Adventure have a range of fun activities for children as young as four. This includes their signature PonyDays during school holidays, which features horseback archery, aerobatics, and - of course - pony rides. Prices start at 27 euros depending on the activity.

If horse riding by itself seems too easy, try combining it with vaulting at Gabi Nehrbass's school in Luxembourg-Merl. Gabi teaches riding from age six, as well as vaulting (acrobatics on horseback) at beginner and advanced level. She teaches adults too, so it's never too late to learn the art of acrobatics on a moving horse! Contact Gabi direct for availability and pricing.
