Actor Steve Buscemi is OK after being punched in the face in New York City

NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Steve Buscemi's publicist says he is OK after the “Boardwalk Empire” star was punched in the face by a man on a New York City street. Police and his publicist say the 66-year-old was assaulted late Wednesday morning in Manhattan. He was sent to a nearby hospital with bruising, swelling and bleeding to his left eye. The New York Police Department put out a nameless statement on the assault Wednesday. Buscemi’s representative confirmed Sunday that the unidentified assault victim in the police statement was the actor. The police department says there have been no arrests and the investigation is continuing.

Federal agency says a second, if weaker, solar storm surge is likely Sunday

A U.S. government agency said a weaker repeat of Saturday's powerful solar storm is likely on Sunday. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that “coronal mass ejections” — clouds of solar plasma that on Saturday led to reports of power grid irregularities and degradation of high-frequency communications and global positioning systems, will slam into the Earth's magnetic field and outer atmosphere. The Saturday storm put on an amazing skyward light show worldwide overnight, leading to minor disruptions to the electric power grid, communications and satellite positioning systems. Brilliant purple, green, yellow and pink hues of the Northern Lights were reported worldwide.

Vast coin collection of Danish magnate is going on sale a century after his death

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The vast coin collection of a Danish butter magnate is set to finally go to on sale a century after his death, and could fetch up to $72 million. Lars Emil Bruun, also known as L.E. Bruun, stipulated in his will that his 20,000-piece collection be safeguarded for 100 years before being sold. Deeply moved by the devastation of World War I, he wanted the collection to serve as a reserve for Denmark, fearing another war. Now, over a century since Bruun’s death at age 71 in 1923, the New York-based rare coin auction house Stack’s Bowers will begin auctioning the collection this fall, with several sales planned over the coming years.

Apple Store employees in Maryland vote to authorize a first strike over working conditions

TOWSON, Md. (AP) — Workers at the first Apple Store to unionize have now also authorized a first strike against the tech giant’s retail operations. A statement from the union representing the workers at a store in Towson, Maryland says they voted late Saturday to authorize a strike. No date was set for the strike. The vote follows what the union called “over a year of negotiations with Apple management that yielded unsatisfactory outcomes.” The workers are seeking changes in what they call unpredictable scheduling practices and are wanting wages that align with the local cost of living. Apple in a statement that it will engage with the union "respectfully and in good faith.”

'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' reigns at the box office with $56.5 million opening

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” has reigned over the weekend box office. Studio estimates Sunday said the latest installment in the “Apes” franchise brought in $56.5 million in North American theaters. It was a much-needed surge for what could be an uncertain summer in theaters. Ryan Gosling's “The Fall Guy” underperformed in ticket sales last week. This week it was No. 2 with $13.7 million. Zendaya's tennis thriller “Challengers” was third with $4.7 million. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” had the third best opening of 2024 so far, after “Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4.”

A plane with 3 aboard lands without landing gear at an Australian airport after burning off fuel

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A light plane has landed safely without landing gear after circling an Australian airport for almost three hours to burn off fuel. The twin-turboprop Beechcraft Super King Air had just taken off from Newcastle Airport when the pilot raised the alarm Monday morning. Video showed the plane landed on the tarmac around three hours later apparently without incident. Fire engines and ambulances were among emergency services standing at the ready. The plane had three people onboard.

Rescuers free 2 horses stuck in the mud in Connecticut

LEBANON, Conn. (AP) — Two horses stuck deep in the mud for hours are free after being pulled out by more than a dozen rescuers in Connecticut. The animals emerged tired, but safe. Members of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department who responded to the call Saturday afternoon found the horses partially on their sides with their legs covered by mud. Dozens of rescuers worked to clear an escape path and position sleds under the animals so they could be pulled out. More than a dozen people pulled the horses free using the sleds and rope.

Swiss fans get ready to welcome Eurovision winner Nemo back home

BERLIN (AP) — Swiss Eurovision fans were getting ready to give a hero’s welcome to singer Nemo, who won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with “The Code,” an operatic pop-rap ode to the singer’s journey toward embracing a nongender identity. National broadcaster SRF said the singer, was to land in Zurich on Sunday night. Switzerland’s contestant beat Croatian rocker Baby Lasagna to the title, winning the most points from a combination of national juries and viewers around the world. The 24-year-old Nemo is the first nonbinary winner of the contest that has long been embraced as a safe haven by the LGBTQ community. Nemo is also the first Swiss winner since 1988, when Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion competed under the Swiss flag.
