How can I create a Meal Account?

When you register your student for school, they automatically receive a Food Services meal account. They will be given a 4-digit PIN that can be used on a keypad to buy meals or drinks.

How can I add funds to their account?

To ensure efficiency and minimize the risk of lost or stolen money, we recommend using the online payment method. Online payments are instantly credited to the student's account. To pay with a debit or credit card, visit the Food Services Payment System.

This service is free of charge, and you can make payments for all your students in a single transaction.

For cash or check payments, please send the money with your student, ensuring their full name (first and last) is written in the memo section. They can either deliver it to the school office (where it will be placed in the FNS mailbox) or hand it to an FNS staff member in the kitchen at the beginning of the day. Payments can be made for a single day, a week, or multiple weeks. The full check amount must be deposited into the student's account, as no change can be provided.

Can my student receive change if I send cash?

It depends. Schools keep a minimal amount of change on hand, and only small amounts can be exchanged. If your student needs change, they should notify the cashier before giving them the money. As the majority of cash transactions are for depositing into the student meal account, cashiers usually provide change only when asked.

What if I forget to send meal money to school?

In cases where onestudent's account lacks sufficient funds for lunch, credit will be granted for one reimbursable meal. However, this credit does not apply to a la carte items such as juice, milk, single entrees, cookies, or extra meals. Students receiving free or reduced-price meal benefits are entitled to one breakfast and one lunch daily. All students must have adequate funds in their account to cover the $5.00cost of a second meal or any a la carte items.

To prevent excessive charges, parents are encouraged to regularly check their student's meal activity. If needed, parents can contact the Food Service office to restrict their student's account from incurring charges for meals, a la carte items, or single entrees. Can Food and Nutrition provide assistance for my student who has a life-threatening/non-life-threatening food allergy or physical disability?

Yes, substitutions and accommodations are available for students with special dietary needs. To request these, please submit a "Request for Special Dietary Accommodations" form or a medical statement to the Food Service office.

The form or statement must include:

  • Food(s) to be avoided or omitted from the child's diet
  • How consuming the food affects the child
  • Food(s) to be used as substitutes

A physician or recognized medical authority must sign the "Request for Special Dietary Accommodations" form or medical statement. No menu changes can be made without either of these documents on file. Substitutions for personal diet preferences are not allowed; however, students can choose from other available options on that day.

To request a substitution or accommodation, contact the Food Service office to arrange a meeting to discuss your student's needs. Special dietary accommodations will be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Is it possible to request food substitutions due to religious or personal reasons?

No, food substitutions are only allowed for special dietary needs as prescribed by a physician or medical authority.

How can I monitor the purchases made by my student using their meal account?

Parents can track their student's purchase activity through Skyward Family Access. Click on the Food Service tab on the left side of the screen to view and print a Customer Meal Statement. Alternatively, you may reach out to the food service staff at your school or the Food Service Office, and they will be happy to generate a report detailing your child's meal purchase activity. This report can be sent via mail, email, or brought home by your child.

If my child transfers to a different school, will their meal account balance be transferred as well?

Yes, when your child transfers to another school within the North Kitsap School District, their meal account balance and free or reduced-price meal eligibility status will be carried over to the new school.

How does NKSD address food allergies and what measures are in place for students with specific dietary requirements?

At North Kitsap School District, we prioritize the safety of our students, especially those with life-threatening food allergies, such as reactions to peanuts, tree nuts, and dairy. Given the vast number of students we cater to and the various food sources we rely on, we can't guarantee the complete absence of all allergens. Please note that labeling such products is a manufacturer's voluntary choice. For students with genuine dietary disabilities, not mere preferences, we ask parents to fill out the "Request for Special Dietary Accommodations" form available on our website to ensure appropriate dietary care.

If we are moving out of the North Kitsap School District, how can I request a refund for my student's remaining meal account balance?

To request a refund, please get in touch with the Food Service office at (360) 396-3279. Refunds will be provided, but allow 6-8 weeks for the check to be mailed to your address.

How do I apply for Free/Reduced Meals?

Parents can apply for Free/Reduced-price meals now through Skyward Family Access. To apply, log in with your username and password, and click the "Food Service" link on the left side of the screen.

Returning students will maintain their prior year's eligibility for the first 30 school days, or until a new application is processed. If a returning student does not have a new application processed by October 1, 2023, they will be automatically transferred to a paid account, and any charges incurred will be the responsibility of the families.

Does my student's PIN remain the same over time?

Yes, your student will keep the same PIN until they graduate or move away from the North Kitsap School District.

What distinguishes a meal from an Ala Carte purchase?

A meal consists of three out of the five food components in the appropriate amounts, which include grains, milk, fruit, vegetables, and meat/meat alternatives. Typically, most entrees account for two food components. Additionally, students are required to select at least half a cup of fruit and/or vegetables. Anything else that is not part of the meal components is considered Ala Carte, and will be priced accordingly.

Is it possible for my student to purchase additional food items (ala carte)?

For elementary students, meal account purchases are limited to breakfast, lunch, milk, and juice. However, if they want to buy an extra entrée using their meal account, you need to send a note to the cashier giving permission. A wanding message will be added to their account, informing the cashier of your authorization, which will be kept on file in the Food Service Office.

Secondary students can use their meal account to buy any available food or snack items. If you prefer that your student not use their meal account in this way, please contact the Food Service Office, and a wanding message will be added to their account to let the cashiers know when they enter their PIN number. Pricing for Ala Carte items can be found on the Menu and Pricing page.

Are School Meals Healthy?

Great question!I am happy to inform you that the North Kitsap School menus have been designed to provide students with the essential daily nutrients, in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Guidelines.

The breakfast and lunch menus offered by the North Kitsap School meet the recommended daily intake of nutrients set by the USDA. Specifically, the breakfast served covers 25% of the daily nutrient requirements, while the lunch provides one-third of the recommended daily allowance. This means that students who eat school meals are consuming a well-balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs.

To ensure that the meals provided to students meet specific nutrient level requirements, the North Kitsap School menus undergo thorough analysis by computer software. This analysis is done to make sure that the meals meet the necessary nutritional standards, such as minimum and maximum calorie intake, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. By using this software, the school can ensure that the meals served to students are nutritious and healthy.

What does a meal include?

For lunch, the meal typically consists of 1-2 ounces of protein, 1-2 servings of bread or grains, 1/2 cup of vegetables, 1/2 cup of fruit, and 8 ounces of milk. Meanwhile, breakfast includes 1 ounce of bread or grains, and either 1 ounce of protein or 2 ounces of bread or grains along with 1/2 cup of juice, 1/2 cup of fruit, and 8 ounces of milk.

Please note that any additional food items or beverages that your child wishes to add to their meal will be considered as Ala-Carte items and will be priced accordingly.

You can check the daily and monthly lunch menus, including the prices, by visiting our Menus and Pricing page, where you can download a copy of the monthly lunch menu.

Is it possible for my student to receive a sack lunch during their field trip?
